We try to keep a few of these sticks in stock but it is not always possible. If we have to make one you may have to wait a few weeks but we will always tell you if your wait is likely to be more than two weeks.

Unless we have them in stock you will need to order a stick and wait for us to make it for you. I have indicated what is left in stock at this time.

We also have a few refurbished antique walking sticks in stock HERE

We like to use interesting and unusual woods for the handles of the Market Stick, Crook and Regency types. Typically we would use something from the following list: Elm, Sycamore, Cherry, Walnut, Beech, Alder, Ash, Oak and Mahogany - but if we see something we like we will try it. As each of these sticks is handmade, no two are identical. Occasionally we are asked to make a pair of sticks and we can try to make them as similar as possible.

If you wish to specify a choice of wood for the handle then please email first to check availability. Shanks are usually hazel but we sometimes use other woods, a brass ferrule is fitted at the tip as standard - if you require a steel-tipped one and/or a rubber one over the metal then tick the appropriate box when ordering. Brass collars may be fitted on some of our sticks in stock or can be requested when ordering.

We can make sticks for "outsize" people - very tall, very heavy or very short (we often make sticks for children) - if you need to discuss any of this then please do so before ordering - email here

Crook

Hardwood handle with the nose turned outwards. Can be used short as a 'proper' walking stick (cane) or long like a hiking stick. These do NOT make good working crooks for catching sheep as the grain in the wood is always weak in at least one place. Horn is a much stronger material for working crooks see the "Horn stick" page).

The Regency

A handle you can really hold!

Designed especially for people who are a bit "wobbly" on their feet, this type of stick is a MUST for anyone who wants real support. The handle is very stylish and doesn't look as if it came straight from a hospital ward. The Regency has, in fact, become the most popular of all the handle shapes. It feels really comfortable and the design of the stick positions the hand and arm directly above (and in line with) the stick shaft, so all your weight is transmitted directly to the ground. There is no flexing or wobbling of the shank, as can happen when the handle is offset to one side.

These sticks have to be handled to be really appreciated and the comments I get from customers in my shop lead me to believe that these are the most comfortable sticks around. If you have to rely on a stick and want style and comfort - look no further! We normally have a few of these in stock - as they are so popular we make lots of them - but each is still handmade!

The addition of a collar can strengthen the joint between handle and shank and I would recommend you add one to your selection if you will be putting a lot of weight on the stick. If you would like to have a plain or engraved collar fitted, go HERE

A note on correct stick length - stand up as straight as you can and measure from the floor to the knuckle joint at the wrist. This allows the arm to be locked straight when your full weight is applied to the stick. It is best to get help when measuring - if you do it yourself there is a tendency to lower your shoulder as you look down and your stick may then end up too short!
